You enter the same birth details on two sites and one says your Moon is in Mesha, the other says Vrishabha. Neither is necessarily wrong. They are measuring the zodiac from different starting points.

The ayanamsa in one paragraph

Western astrology starts the zodiac at the spring equinox (tropical). Vedic astrology starts it at a fixed star reference (sidereal). Because the equinox drifts slowly against the stars, the gap between the two — the ayanamsa — grows about one degree every 72 years and is a little over 24 degrees today. Every sidereal position is a tropical position minus the ayanamsa.

Different schools, different numbers

Several ayanamsa values are in use. Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) is the one adopted by the Indian Calendar Reform Committee and is the default almost everywhere in India. Raman and Krishnamurti (KP) differ from it by roughly a degree or more. That difference is enough to move a planet across a sign boundary when it sits within a degree of the edge.

How to tell if you are on a boundary

  • Open your chart and look at the Moon's degree within its sign.
  • If it is under 1° or over 29°, a different ayanamsa — or a birth time that is off by an hour — can move it.
  • The nakshatra and pada are a good second check: they change with the ayanamsa too, but less often.

Birth time matters more than you think

The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, roughly half a degree per hour. The Lagna moves a full sign every two hours. If your recorded birth time is rounded to the nearest half hour, the Lagna may already be uncertain even when the ayanamsa is not. Jyotish Drishti's Kundli shows a sensitivity note whenever a small time shift would change a key placement.
